Prosvjed Zenske mreze u povodu 8 martaOn the occasion of March 8, the International Women's Day, the Croatian Women Network orgnized a protest walk in Zagreb, under the motto "Unfulfilled Women's Rights - the Debt the State owes to Women", to warn about the bad status of women in society. A procession of about 50 women, primarily activists, gathered at the Stone Gate and Neva Tölle, Coordinator of Autonomous Women House, gave a short speech on the bad status of women, after which they proceeded to the Ban Jelačić Square.

Unlike last year, when they created quite a stir with the radical call for termination of contract with the Vatican, this year the emphasis was put on the debt the state owes to women. Nonetheless, there were banners in the spirit of last year’s march: “My daughter is pregnant because she learns catechises in school, not sex-ed”, “Equality is possible only in a secular state" were just some of the banners.

Sanja Juras, one of the coordinators of the Women’s Network, said that the debt relates to reduction of women unemployment, temporary employment, the Law on medically assisted insemination, lower wages paid to women, abortions that are not available to all women, bad legislation on family violence, etc.

“There is a whole contingent of women’s human rights threatened by discriminatory legislation”, Juras said.

The low attendance was likely due to the fact that protest was held in a working day, but organizers expressed satisfaction, noting that they didn't expect the masses to appear anyways, and that it was important to continue the struggle for their rights.

Šime Lučin was the only Member of Parliament that accepted the invitation and joined the protests, together with trade union leaders and Crvena Akcija (Red Action) activists, who distributed leaflets around. (Source: Zamirzine)
