Yesterday, in Brussels, the European Commission announced the proposal to terminate visa regime for the citizens of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia for the countries of the “Schengen Area”. The Heinrich Boll Foundation of the German Greens protests the omission of Bosnia and Herzegovina on that list.
In the open letter to the highest offices of the European Union, the Foundation supports the recommendation to terminate visas for the three countries and expressed its concerns over the fact that the list didn't include BiH, considering it a great failure of European policies towards the country and another disappointment for BiH citizens.
“The recommendation discourages the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and encourages the policies that have disunited the country for years and do all they can to keep BiH as far from European values and prospects as possible. The recommendation discriminates against those citizens of BiH that hold a single, BiH citizenship", says the Foundation.
It adds that now, after failed EU policies in the war and failure to prevent the genocide in Srebrenica in July 1995, the European Union decided to further isolate BiH through its omission from the list. The Foundation insists that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are allowed to travel without visas on January 1, 2010.
