The countries of the Western Balkans find themselves all ranked “partly free” in the Freedom of the Press 2012 Report, released by Freedom House two days ago (May 1). With the exception of Montenegro and Kosovo, which recorded modest advances, all other countries dropped down on the list.

On Sunday, April 8, the International Roma Day was marked in Serbia with a gathering held at the Serbian Parliament (Skupština), which concluded that the state has worked hard to improve the status of the Roma over the past several years, with the emphasis on the need to terminate sub-standards Roma slums and secure proper accommodation for the residents.

Last week, the women all over the world celebrated and marked the International Women’s Day (more about the day and its significant in the Wikipedia article). The women in the region also marked March 8, most of them with parties and shopping tours, but increasing numbers of women took to the streets to demand their rights and equality.

The International Social Entrepreneurship Conference, held last week, February 29-March 1, 2012, at the Kadir Has University in Istanbul, Turkey, gathered more than 150 practitioners of social entrepreneurship, scholars and academics, representatives of civil society organisations from the countries of Western Balkans, Turkey, Ukraine and Georgia, Germany and the UK, to discuss current and future trends in social entrepreneurship in the region, Europe and globally.
